Organizational Change
That Starts With Why.

We work with nonprofits, family-owned businesses, and community institutions to find the real reason behind the results they’re getting, then build a plan they can actually carry out.

About Consultable Labs

An Honest Diagnosis, Then a Plan You’ll Actually Use.

Most leaders already know the symptoms. Attendance is slipping. The strategic plan sits on a shelf. The succession conversation stalls every time it starts. We begin a step earlier, with why, because the fix for a structural problem looks nothing like the fix for a people problem.

From there we build something workable: clear roles and decision authority, priorities your board can act on, and enough follow-through that the work outlasts the engagement. Based in Raleigh, North Carolina, working with organizations across the United States.

Engagements Scoped to What Your Organization Needs

Most work starts with an audit, because it’s hard to plan around a problem you haven’t named yet. From there: strategic planning, board and leadership development, succession, or a package built around your situation. Not sure which? That’s a normal place to begin.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we hear most from boards, founders, and executive directors before a first call.

Start with a short discovery call. We’ll ask what’s happening on the ground, tell you plainly whether we’re the right fit, and leave you with something concrete you can bring back to your board or your family. No cost and no obligation.

Nonprofits, family-owned and founder-led businesses, and faith-based and community institutions — most often ones going through a leadership change, a succession question, or a governance problem that keeps resurfacing. We’re values-driven, but the way we work doesn’t require you to share ours.

Usually the recommendations weren’t wrong — they just never got implemented. So we spend the front end on why you’re getting your current results, and we build follow-through into the engagement rather than handing over a document and leaving.

Interviews, a review of your documents and finances, and a look at how decisions actually get made compared with how they’re supposed to. You end up with a clear, defensible picture of where the organization stands — useful on its own, and the right starting point before any new strategic plan.

Most engagements run four to twelve weeks. Audits are shorter; planning, board work, and succession run longer. We scope the first phase tightly so you can decide on real information — and we can often fit a diagnostic to an existing capacity-building grant or professional development budget.

No. Family disagreements, board conflict, and staff issues are a normal part of this work, and confidentiality is the baseline rather than a special accommodation. An outside voice is often what lets a group have the conversation at all.

Yes. We’re based in Raleigh and work remotely with organizations across the United States, with on-site time where the work calls for it.
